This house was originally a modest concrete block rectangle with a flat roof, the original family home of the client. The brief called for a complete makeover with the addition of an annexed unit, or “granny flat” to allow the client’s mother, the original owner, to return to Montville and reside with them. The new rear deck has expansive views over the coast. The external cladding is rendered “koolwall” polystyrene panelling, which has excellent insulation properties and matches the original rendered blockwork. The original flat deck roof was replaced with a pitched roof, in keeping with the rural building form characteristic of the area.
